Encampments are dwellings that people experiencing homelessness have created in areas that are unsuited for living. Making note of encampments will allow users to keep track of the encampment’s status over time.

This article will cover:

  • Creating a New Encampment
  • Updating Camp States & Adding a Note

If you click on an existing green dot, you can see information about an encampment such as the camp's name, description, when the camp was last engaged, and a way to navigate to its location.

Creating a New Encampment

To create a new encampment, tap the blue dot with the plus sign on the bottom of your screen. Tap on the green “Encampment” button.

You will be taken to another map that will log your device’s current location.

Depending on your carrier and your device, your GPS location may be slightly off from where you are. Press and hold onto the circle to move it to your desired location.

Tap Next after logging your location.

Here, you can enter in a name and description for the camp. Please avoid using client-level PII (Personally Identifying Information) for the name and description of the camp.

To quickly generate a name for the camp, tap the “Name Suggester” button to create a camp name based on its location.

Tap on Done to log your new encampment.

You will be redirected back to the map and the encampment card will populate automatically.

Tap on the encampment card to view the encampment's profile.

Updating Camp States

In the camp's profile, you can upload a photo, add comments, and update the camp's status.

Tap the Notes button to add notes or update the camp's status. When a camp is created, it is automatically set as active.

To update the status of an encampment, tap on one of the statuses. The following list defines what each camp status is:

  • Deactivate Camp: When the encampment looks unoccupied.

  • Close Camp: When the camp is no longer being used and has been cleaned up.
  • Reopen Camp: When the camp is re-occupied with occupants.
